The Golden Gate, historically known as Porta septemtrionalis, was constructed in 305 AD as the primary and most decorated entrance to the palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian. This northern gateway was originally reserved exclusively for the emperor and his family. As part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the structure is one of the best-preserved Roman gates in existence.

The architecture features remnants of its ancient Roman origins alongside later additions, such as the medieval church of St. Martin built within the gate's upper walls. The site serves as a transition point between the modern city and the ancient palace core.

Located immediately outside the gate is the monumental statue of Bishop Grgur Ninski. It is a common local tradition to touch the statue's big toe for good luck. The gate is open to the public and serves as a major pedestrian thoroughfare into the historical center.
