This archaeological and historical complex contains layers of history ranging from Geto-Dacian fortresses dating to the 6th century BC to medieval fortifications from the Tatar-Mongol and Moldavian eras. The site is situated on a limestone bend of a river gorge, preserving ruins of an ancient citadel and various historical remnants. It is currently under consideration for UNESCO World Heritage status.
Cave monasteries and hermitages from the 14th century are carved directly into massive limestone cliffs. These religious sites include an active Orthodox cave monastery, reflecting the area's significance as a center for Christian worship. The complex is open to the public and allows for the exploration of its various historical layers.
The surrounding landscape consists of a scenic river valley and traditional villages that maintain local rural habitats and culinary traditions. Facilities such as the Eco Resort Butuceni are located within the area. Available activities include hiking, cycling, and kayaking on the river.
