Founded in 1780 by Emperor Joseph II, this historic military defense complex served to protect the northern borders of the Habsburg Monarchy. The site is a well-preserved example of 18th-century military architecture and is recognized as an urban monument reservation. It combines a fortified city layout with integrated urban greenery and historical monuments.
The site is notable for its extensive underground labyrinth of corridors, which reaches depths of up to three storeys. These tunnels formed a critical part of the defensive system. Tours of the underground sections and the bastion are available, alongside various thematic programs and exhibitions.
In addition to its historical role, the grounds serve as the venue for the annual Brutal Assault music festival, focusing on metal and hardcore genres. The fortress currently functions as a museum and historical site where cultural programs are regularly held within the complex.
