Commissioned in the 16th century by Sher Shah Suri, an Afghan king, this garrison fort is a significant example of early Muslim military architecture. The design incorporates a blend of Hindu, Afghan, and Persian architectural styles. The complex is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a national heritage monument.

The site covers a 70-hectare area and is enclosed by massive defensive walls. The fortification includes 12 monumental gateways and 68 bastions. Within the walls, historical structures such as the Shahi Masjid and the Haveli Man Singh are preserved. A unique feature of the complex is its status as a living fort, as a residential village has existed within the perimeter since the time of construction.

Restoration efforts are ongoing to improve infrastructure and accessibility. These projects include the opening of an on-site museum. The grounds are open for exploration, showcasing well-preserved military architecture and historical buildings.
