Commissioned by Pope Pius II and constructed between 1458 and 1461, this fortress was designed to ensure the city's allegiance to the Holy See. It occupies the site of the Roman amphitheater of Bleso, reflecting a strategic military reuse of ancient foundations. The structure originally served to guard the city and control access routes through the surrounding valley.
Throughout its history, the building has fulfilled various functions, including serving as a papal residence, an armory, and military barracks. From the later centuries until 1960, it was utilized as a prison and detention center. Following restoration and rehabilitation projects, the site was officially opened to the public on December 15, 2018.
The fortress is a recognized National Monument and remains a central historical symbol. During the Christmas season, the structure and the adjacent Anfiteatro di Bleso serve as the backdrop for a videomapping spectacle titled La poetica della luce, which uses light projections to transform the historic architecture into a visual display.
