Togoville is the historical namesake of the country and served as the former capital of Togoland. It is the site of the 1884 treaty that established the Togoland protectorate. Located on the northern shore of Lake Togo, the town is home to the Maison Royale museum, which preserves royal relics, and a traditional barter market that takes place twice a week.
The town is a significant center for voodoo religious practices, with active shrines positioned throughout the area. It also contains the Cathédrale Notre-Dame du Lac Togo, a colonial-era church constructed in 1910 that features unique depictions of black African saints. This cathedral, which functions as a shrine to the Virgin Mary, was visited by Pope John Paul II.
