Brú na Bóinne

This UNESCO World Heritage property, recognized since 1993, comprises a vast collection of prehistoric monuments dating between 3500 and 2500 BC. The Neolithic complex contains the spectacular passage tombs of Newgrange, Knowth, and Dowth, which represent one of the most important prehistoric landscapes in the world. The site is particularly renowned for containing the largest collection of megalithic art in Western Europe.

The passage tomb at Newgrange is famous for its archaeoastronomical alignment, specifically the Winter Solstice sunrise illumination. During this event, the rising sun aligns with a roof box to light the interior chamber. The broader landscape features significant Neolithic structures and approximately 90 additional monuments situated within a bend of the River Boyne.

Access to the monuments is managed through a Visitor Centre, which serves as the essential point for guided tours. The centre houses an extensive exhibition and a full-scale replica of the Newgrange chamber, providing detailed insights into the archaeological history and construction of the tombs.
