The museum is housed within the former Director's residence on Île Royale. It focuses on the history of the penal colony (bagne) that functioned across the Îles du Salut archipelago for over a century, documenting the period from 1852 to 1953.
Managed by the AGAMIS association, the museum is situated within the historic complex of the former French penal system. It is also known as the Musée des îles du Salut and provides information on the life and operations of the colony during its years of activity.
