Established in 1888, this museum institution manages a network of 20 sites across the region. The main building dates to 1903 and is one of the few structures that survived the 1940 bombing. The museum is open to the public and serves as a repository for 10,000 years of history, documenting mountain life and maritime heritage through archives of photographs and objects such as historical uniforms.
Notable exhibitions include the Sølvskatten fra Bratten (Bratten Silver Treasure), the largest Viking Age silver find in Northern Norway, and displays on Sami culture and local fishing history. An interactive dry fish aquarium is part of the collection. The institution also operates the Jektefartsmuseet, which opened in 2019 and was named Museum of the Year in 2024 for its presentation of traditional trade vessels.
