This karst cave is a significant Paleolithic site and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was inhabited by Cro-Magnon people approximately 11,000 to 18,000 years ago and serves as a vital record of early human activity.

The site contains more than 600 Magdalenian engravings featuring a variety of animals and symbols. These works of parietal art were instrumental in developing a scientific understanding of the artistic and cognitive capabilities of prehistoric humans.

The cave is part of the Franco-Cantabrian cave art region and is operated as a show cave, allowing for public access to the decorated galleries. The collection is recognized as a major example of art from the Upper Paleolithic period.
