The waterfall features a 235-metre single-drop, making it one of the tallest uninterrupted falls on the African continent. Downstream, the Kalambo Gorge reaches widths of approximately 1 km and depths up to 300 m, extending for 5 km before the terrain opens into a rift valley. The width of the falling water varies between 3.6 and 18 m.
The area is internationally recognized as a major prehistoric archaeological site. Research has uncovered evidence of human activity and occupation dating back nearly 500,000 years, with specific findings aged at approximately 476,000 years. This long history of human presence makes the site a significant location for heritage and evolutionary study.
An expedition led by Enid Gordon-Gallien mapped the falls and the surrounding area in 1928. While initial estimates suggested the height exceeded 300 m, measurements taken in 1956 recorded a height of 221 m, though more recent data indicates 235 m. The site is protected as a National Monument and is a notable destination for hiking.
