With a population of 2,762, this historic settlement evolved from a fishing community into a landscape of four islands connected by bridges. It is defined by rows of brightly painted houses and picturesque canals. Notable landmarks include the Church of San Martino, which features a prominent leaning campanile. The area is open to the public and connected to the neighboring island of Mazzorbo by a bridge.

The island is renowned for its needle lace-making (merletto), a tradition preserved at the Lace Museum (Museo del Merletto). Housed in the historic palace of the Podestà of Torcello, the museum occupies the former site of the Lace School, which operated from 1872 to 1970. The collection includes rare specimens of Venetian lace dating from the 16th to the 20th century.

Piazza Galuppi serves as the central hub, surrounded by shops and traditional establishments. Local culinary specialties include the Bussolà biscuit and Gò risotto (risotto de gò), a traditional dish prepared with fish. The island maintains a strong cultural identity rooted in its history within the former Republic of Venice.
