Fort Charlotte

Constructed between 1787 and 1790, this British colonial fortification is the largest of three historic forts in the vicinity. It was built under the direction of Lord Dunmore, the British colonial governor, following the American Revolutionary War. Named in honor of Queen Saharia Charlotte, the structure was intended to serve as a battle station to protect the western entrance of the harbor, though it was never used in active combat.

The site is situated on a hill and characterized by its late-18th-century British colonial architecture. Notable features include a water-less moat, a drawbridge, and ramparts. The complex also contains underground passageways, dungeons, and a collection of 42 cannons.

The fort is a historic sightseeing attraction that is open to the public. It provides panoramic views of the harbor and nearby islands. The site remains one of the few standing English forts in the territory, offering a detailed look at military engineering and colonial history from the late 1700s.
