This private cultural institution was inaugurated in 1998 by Karim da Silva and is housed in a historic residence featuring Afro-Brazilian architecture dating back to 1890. The museum's collection and library are dedicated to preserving Afro-Brazilian heritage, the history of Brazilian immigration, and the memory of the slave trade. In 2018, it served as the venue for the International Conference on Reparative Justice for the Enslavement of Afrikan Peoples.
The facility includes an attached hotel and a specialized library. As of January 2024, the museum was reported to be closed for renovations as part of the Benin Revealed programme.
