Alfama, considered to be the oldest part of the city, is a district full of historical buildings and medieval narrow streets. This emblematic quarter has served as an inspiration for many poets and novelists and it also had a huge influence on many Fado songs. Fado is a traditional Portuguese music genre and Alfama is home to many cosy Fado restaurants and bars.
Historical sights to visit in this neighbourhood include Lisbon Cathedral, Monastery of São Vicente de Fora, and Church of Santa Engrácia.
If you want to get the best panoramic view of this quarter, together with the São Jorge Castle, head to Miradouro de Santa Luzia.
