An ancient public space consisting of numerous monuments and remains of government buildings that are worth exploring.
Elections and religious ceremonies were held here, as well as various performances and festivities. This site used to be the centre of ancient Athens, come here to enjoy its unique atmosphere.
The most notable building is probably the Stoa of Attalos II, a covered walkway that served as a commercial hub of the ancient city. Now it houses a museum with excavations and sculptures from this area. Another significant construction is the Temple of Hephaestus, one of the best preserved ancient temples.
A neat trick if you are a European student: no need to stand in the queue, you will get your ticket for free. So just skip the line and head towards the entrance.
If you aren't a student or hail from a different continent, do not fret. You can still avoid waiting in the queues if you purchase your tickets online.

This ticket is valid for 5 days for most of the monuments run by the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sport.
