Bakhmut is a city in the Donbass and the administrative centre of Bakhmut Raion in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine. It is located on the Bakhmutovka River, about 89 km north of Donetsk city, the administrative center of the oblast. Population: 71,094From 1924 to 2016, the city was called Artemivsk or Artyomovsk. On 4 February 2016 the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine confirmed the name change of the city by returning to the original one. Prior to 2020, when the designation was abolished, Bakhmut was designated a "city of regional significance".
Bakhmut was the capital of Slavo-Serbia, which was established by Serbian migrants from Austria. In 1920–1924, the city was an administrative center of Donets Governorate of the Ukrainian SSR.
