Designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for the 1929 International Expo, this elegant and simple building served as the German Pavilion and presented Germany after WWI. Now it is a gem of modern architecture.
The location was chosen by Mies because it lead to the palace and it was where King Alphonso XII was officially received. Mies placed only two chairs inside - one for the King and one for the Queen of Spain.
After the Expo, parts of the Pavilion were dismantled and sent back to Germany, but Catalan architects started rebuilding it in the 1980s. The Mies Van Der Rohe Foundation now organizes temporary exhibitions inside the Pavilion.
