This cathedral is dedicated to Saint Denis, whose grave it was built on between the years 1136 and 1286. It contains the very first choir that was constructed using all the Gothic elements typical for that architectonic style.
The grounds beneath it used to serve as a cemetery, and the cathedral continued with that, since most of the kings and queens of France are buried here.
The church was one of the first to promote the art of light and it is equipped with beautiful stained glass clerestory windows that give this place a completely different and magical atmosphere, worthy of the royalty that rests here forever.
This place gives you the possibility to live through 12 centuries of history of France in one day while feeling the serene silence of the ones who used to rule it.
You can get here by subway line 13, station Basilique de Saint-Denis.
