The complex was established in 1707 as a copy of an Italian villa, designed by the architect Domenico Martinelli. It consists of a ceremonial Lower Château and a service Upper Château, showcasing a three-winged design. The interiors are notable for their Baroque and Baroque revival styles, featuring elaborate stucco work by Baldassare Fontana and a prominent ceiling fresco in the main hall. The site played a significant role during the late Habsburg monarchy and was later modified by the Berchtold family.
The castle is open to the public and displays various state rooms with painted ceilings and period furniture. It houses extensive collections of artworks and graphics. The historical interiors reflect the refined noble lifestyle of its former owners across three centuries of history.
The surrounding grounds include an extensive park that was originally designed in the French style before being transformed into an English landscape park. These gardens host seasonal fuchsia exhibitions and a bird of prey breeding station.
