Canals of Amsterdam

Local nameAmsterdamse grachten
LocationCentrum, Amsterdam, Netherlands

This interconnected web of canals, in total about a hundred kilometres long, going through the city centre inspired Amsterdam’s nickname - “Venice of the North”.

The main canals were constructed in the 17th century and the whole area coming from that age is on the UNESCO World Heritage List (since 2010).

The canals, crossed by roughly 1500 bridges, can be admired both from the shore (where you can enjoy the view of the canals with many little boats) or from the water (during a canal tour). The tours definitely offer a unique sight of the city and an unforgettable experience.
