What is now a bustling neighbourhood full of nightlife and amusement parks used to be called a "land without shadows" by the native Americans, for its beaches, that were constantly bathing in sunlight.
The origin of Coney Island's name is not certain, but the most popular theory is that it comes from the old Dutch word for rabbit, as the island used to be swarmed by them.
Today, Coney Island is known for its afternoon activities, including beaches, restaurants and grills, an aquarium, and the most visited attraction in the whole area - Luna Park.
You can get here by subway, station Coney Island - Stillwell Av (lines D, F, N, Q). If you can, try to avoid coming here during the weekend, as the neighbourhood gets pretty crowded.
