Dettifoss

Local nameDettifoss
LocationNorðurland eystra, Iceland

Set in the Vatnajökull National Park, Dettifoss is estimated to be the most powerful waterfall in Europe. It is 45 metres high and 100 metres wide. It is said that once you have seen this natural beauty, you will not be the same person you were before.

The scenic waterfall has served as an inspiration for several music composers. Movie fans may also remember it from the opening scene of the 2012 science-fiction film Prometheus.

The surrounding area is a popular hiking destination, and the waterfall can be approached both from the east and from the west. The eastern route is considered to be a bit safer. Be aware though that no matter which path you choose to reach the waterfall by, the ground around it is usually quite wet and slippery, so caution is recommended.
