Goa Gajah cave

Local nameGoa Gajah
LocationBali, Indonesia

This man-made cave is richly decorated with carvings and it also contains bathing pools and fountains. Although it has a terrifying face carved on a facade right above the entrance, it is actually a peaceful place used for meditation. When it was discovered, its entrance was considered to depict elephant's head - hence the name.

This archaeological site dates back to the 9th century and since 1995 it is listed as a UNESCO monument. It is a significant spiritual place, so please wear a scarf or a sarong if you want to enter the temple. They are available at the entrance.
