This world-famous square is the true heart of Brussels. In 1998 it was listed among UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It is encompassed with guildhalls and the City Hall (a 15th-century gothic gem) and it is also known as the location of the famous Flower Carpet.
Flower Carpet is a biennial event during which countless colorful begonias are laid out on the square in simple patterns, covering the area of 1,800 square meters. The first Flower Carpet was set up back in 1971. If you visit the square in that period, be prepared for massive crowds of tourists.
