This Neoclassical cathedral presiding over the Senate Square is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Helsinki. Completed in 1852, this gem of neoclassical architecture was designed by Carl Ludvig Engel. In fact, many other buildings lining the square were designed by this German architect.
This cathedral was originally known as St Nicholas' Church, as it was built in order to celebrate Tsar Nicholas I of Russia. The name was changed in 1917, the year of Finnish declaration of independence.
Helsinki Cathedral is notable mainly for its green-colored dome and splendid architecture. The interior may seem quite plain but it is still worth visiting.
