Hvitserkur

Local nameHvítserkur
LocationIceland

Hvitserkur is a 15-meter-tall sea stack resembling a drinking animal. People can't decide whether it looks most like a rhino, a dragon or an elephant. According to a folk legend, the rock is, in fact, a petrified troll who tried to steal the bell from a nearby convent. Either way, it is a natural sight not to be missed.

Interestingly, the base of this rock formation had to be artificially reinforced with concrete to prevent it from collapsing into the sea.

The surrounding area is great for birdwatching as many seabirds live here and it is also home to a large seal colony. There is a road leading to a nearby parking lot from Ósar, you can walk down from there to the shore.
