This monumental gate was modelled after the French Triumphal Arch. It is dedicated to the tens of thousands of Indian soldiers who died during the First World War in service of the British army. Some thirteen thousand names of these soldiers can be seen inscribed into the gate.
The construction of the 42-metres-tall gate started in 1921. Eventually, several other, smaller memorials were also erected in its vicinity. Most important of these is the Amar Jawan Joti, which stands directly under the gate.
