Located in front of the National Museum, this memorial commemorates Jan Palach, a Czech student who set himself on fire in 1969 in protest of the Soviet invasion. Palach was not the only one to commit suicide in Wenceslas Square, in fact, he was part of a group of students who decided to sacrifice themselves. Though most of the students later decided not to undergo this, Jan Zajic did not back away. His name is also written on this lying cross.
