What distinguishes Jatiluwih rice fields from other rice fields (and why it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is the SUBAK watering system which is still used here and which has been developed in the 9th century. Due to the tireless work of the local community that maintains it, the watering system gives the rice fields a very calm, historic atmosphere.
