Kalište was a small village which fell into the hands of German soldiers during World War II. The village was a home to Slovak partisans that were fighting against Germans in their own way and thanks to these fights ensured the future of Slovakia as the country that wasn't a voluntary part of Nazi Germany.
However, German soldiers turned against the whole village at one point and burned many people alive in their homes or shot them on the road. Those families that survived were then moved to Banska Bystrica.
There's an educational trail set-up and an "Orchard of Life", in which each small tree commemorates similar horrific events in other villages such as Kalište in Slovakia.
