Knights of Malta Square

Local namePiazza Dei Cavalieri Di Malta
LocationRipa, Rome, Italy

Located just at the top of the famous Avetine hill, this small but picturesque square is named after the order of the Knights of Malta. The knights' headquarter was the Priarto di Malta, also to be found on the square.

The square used to host the ritual festival of Armilustrium, in the days of the ancient Roman empire. During this festival, the god of war, Mars, was worshipped.

Today, the square has another speciality - if you look through the keyhole in the Priorato's main door you can see the dome of St Peter’s Basilica.
