Kushida Shrine

Local name櫛田神社
LocationHakata-ku, Fukuoka, Japan

Founded in 757, the shrine is considered to be the oldest Shinto shrine in the city. Religious festivals and celebrations are held here annually and attract plenty of tourists.

The Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival takes place in July and the Setsubun Taisai festival is held in February. During the latter, a huge Japanese theatrical mask (tabuku mask) serves as the entrance to the shrine and passing through it is supposed to bring you good luck.

There is also a well in the complex which is said to grant longevity or eternal youth to anyone who drinks from it. However, the water contains natural salt, so don't drink too much of it.
