One of the most popular tourist attractions that Monte offers - a ride down the mountain on a wicker sledge. The sledges are gliding on wooden runners and they are driven by two "pullers" dressed in traditional white clothes. Back in the 19th century, it was a fast way for the locals to get from Monte down to Funchal.
Nowadays the locals prefer taking a bus, but the traditional toboggan ride draws plenty of tourists. The journey down to Funchal is about 2 kilometers long and takes approximately 10 minutes.
