Municipal Square

This picturesque square is home to many interesting sights, such as the Neoclassical building of Lisbon's City Hall, and the city's Pelourinho, which is a pillory erected after an earthquake in 1755. There are no more public whippings to be witnessed here today, as it serves as a national monument since 1910.

Both the square and a former city hall building where built after the 1755 earthquake. Unfortunately, the city hall was destroyed by fire in 1863. Only two years after this, the construction of today's city hall began and this elegant building is now the square's eye-catching feature.
