This eutrophic lake (meaning of high biological productivity) takes its name from a large number of midges that occupy this area during summer. The lake is home to a huge number of aquatic insects in general, as well as waterbirds.
If interested in birdwatching, this is the place to go. Apart from watching the birds, you can also visit the nearby Sigurgeir's Bird Museum. In addition, there are several caves and hot baths to be explored.
The area that surrounds the scenic Lake Mývatn is a popular tourist destination and makes for a perfect day trip full of untouched nature and hiking. The natural beauty is something to behold and the waterbirds population is abundant, no matter if you come in summer or winter.
