Nalchik is the capital city of the Kabardino-Balkar Republic, Russia, situated at an altitude of 550 meters in the foothills of the Caucasus Mountains; about 100 kilometers northwest of Beslan. It covers an area of 131 square kilometers. Its population has fluctuated over the years, with the following numbers: 240,203; 274,974; 234,547.
