Osaka Castle

Local name大阪城天守閣
LocationChūō-ku, Osaka, Japan

The beautiful castle with a spectacular tower is located in the heart of Osaka. It was built in 1597 by Hideyoshi Toyotomi and it was meant to play a major role in the unification of Japan under the new dynasty.

In the 17th century, the dynasty was unseated and the castle was basically destroyed. Later on (in 1931), it was restored and survived till modern days as an imposing sight.

For some time, in the first half of the 20th century, it even served as a military base. Today, it is open for public as a museum that introduces its visitors not only to the history of the castle but also to the life of Hideyoshi Toyotomi.

The whole complex (the castle together with the park) is a popular site which is worth visiting especially during the seasons when the cherry trees located around the castle are in blossom.
