Originally constructed in 1583 during the Azuchi-Momoyama period, this landmark played a significant role in the unification of Japan. The site has undergone multiple destructions and reconstructions, including a major rebuilding in 1931 funded by public donations and a subsequent restoration in 1997. The main tower (Tenshukaku) is recognized as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property, while the surrounding grounds are designated as a Special Historic Site.

The structure features a five-story main keep situated on a tall stone foundation. Extensive defensive fortifications include moats and various buildings designated as important cultural assets. Historically associated with figures such as Toyotomi Hideyoshi (a prominent daimyo and unifier of Japan) and Tokugawa Ieyasu (the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate), the castle is also known by the names Kinjo or Kinkei.

The interior of the reconstructed tower functions as a museum showcasing rich cultural assets related to its history and the life of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. An observation deck is located on the eighth floor. The surrounding grounds encompass a large public park and include various structures designated as important cultural assets.
