The bridge is a monumental three-tiered stone structure constructed in the first half of the 1st century AD. Standing at a height of 48.8 meters, it is the highest known Roman aqueduct bridge and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was originally designed to allow the Nîmes aqueduct to cross the Gardon River, supplying water to the Roman colony of Nemausus.
The architectural design consists of three levels of arches and remains remarkably well-preserved. This technical and artistic achievement demonstrates the ingenuity of Roman engineering. The structure served as a vital component of a larger water transport system and continues to stand as a significant historical monument.
The site features a museum, a cinema, and a visitor center dedicated to the history of the bridge and its construction. Guided tours are available, providing detailed insights into the Roman engineering methods used to build the aqueduct. Cultural activities and outdoor exploration are also part of the site's offerings.
