Royal Palace

Local nameDet kongelige slott
LocationOslo, Norway

The official royal residence is a majestic Neoclassical complex hovering over the city. The construction started in 1824 and it was first used by King Oscar I in 1849. In the years that followed many Norwegian sovereigns and their families lived in this palace and the present king Harald V of Norway lives here even today.

It is only open in the summer and you need to take the guided tour if you want to explore the palace. However, you are welcome to walk around the imposing gardens during opening hours. If you are lucky, you may even get to see the changing of the guards ceremony.
