This cathedral is the third one built in the same location because the two other ones burned down by accident. This one too suffered some damage; this time it was not because of fire, but rather because of a bomb that crashed there during World War II.
The overseeing architect that was in charge of designing this building, Santino Solari, influenced the architecture of the entire country.
There are still two out of seven original bells in the cathedral and they still ring to this day. The other ones were confiscated during both world wars, and the bells preceding these ones (in the older cathedrals) all melted in the fires. Nowadays, there is a total of seven bells that can play a variety of songs. You can also go see a crypt in the basement, where all the archbishops of Salzburg were buried.
If you decide to go there during the official liturgy, you might hear the Cathedral's Boys Choir singing or professional musicians from the Mozarteum Orchestra playing traditional church music. The cathedral is 5 minutes away from the Salzburg Mozartsteg bus stop (bus line 270). Although the entrance is free, you can contribute to the cathedral with a small donation.
Changes are possible due to church services, concerts etc.
The cathedral crypt is open for visitors Mon to Sat from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sundays and religious holidays.
The crypt is closed during church services and cathedral concerts. Furthermore, the crypt may stay closed without prior announcements for organizational or technical reasons.
There are free guided tours available to be arranged through the Cathedral Museum.
