Also known as Sergels torg, this square is named after a popular Swedish neoclassical sculptor, Johan Tobias Sergel, who used to live and work nearby. Considered by some to be the busiest square in Stockholm, it serves as a meeting place both for tourists and for locals, as well as the location of choice for all manners of public gatherings. If you're lucky, you may witness a celebration or a festival here.
The most dominant feature of the square, completed in 1967, during the modernization of the city centre, is its Kristallvertikalaccent, a huge glass obelisk designed by Edwin Öhrström. This 37.5-meter-tall artwork was installed in the middle of Sergel fountain in 1974. It is especially splendid at night when it is beautifully illuminated.
Some say that the square has become somewhat unkempt in the recent years and that it has become especially popular with the bad sorts of people, who come to sell drugs or drink alcohol.
