Shoes on the Danube Bank

This memorial on the Danube riverbank commemorates nearly four thousand of citizens of Budapest (mainly of Jewish origin) who were killed by the fascist Arrow Cross Party during World War II.

The victims were shot on the riverbank so that the bodies would fall into the water and be washed away. Before being shot they were ordered to take off their clothes as well as their shoes – this act is referred to by the memorial.

The memorial consists of 60 pairs of iron shoes and it was finished in 2005. It was created by Gyula Pauer and Can Togay. Sometimes you can see flowers left in the shoes by the visitors.
