This 74-hectare site was established in 1859 and is managed by the National Parks Board. It represents the evolution of a British tropical colonial garden into a modern scientific institution focused on conservation and education. The landscape contains historic buildings and diverse plantings that illustrate its development as a significant center for botanical research, particularly in the fields of orchid and rubber cultivation.
The grounds house a vast collection of more than 10,000 plant species, including significant living collections of orchids, gingers, palms, and cycads. Specific areas include a tropical rainforest, an evolution garden, and a herbarium. The National Orchid Garden features a world-class orchid collection, while the Jacob Ballas Children's Garden provides a dedicated space for play and learning about nature.
The site is considered one of Asia's most important botanical gardens. It consists of six distinct areas, including a jungle and various specialized botanical collections.
