This neighbourhood is known for its extravagance. In the last 30 years of the 20th century, it became New York’s art centre where the artists lived, worked and put their work on display in the famed local galleries.
It also gained its fame for the architecture. There are countless cast-iron houses located there and their facades are part of SoHo's unique character.
Today, SoHo is best known as the part of the city devoted to shopping (the most extraordinary boutiques together with the well known and widespread brand shops can be found here). Its nightlife with an array of hip bars and restaurants is yet another draw attracting both the locals and tourists.
The name SoHo refers to its location. Being SOuth of the HOuston Street, the neighbourhood's name is a combination of the two words.
