Sun Voyager

Local nameSólfar
LocationMiðborg, Reykjavík, Iceland

Located on the waterfront of Reykjavik, Sólfar is a modern sculpture by a famous Icelandic sculptor, Jón Gunnar Árnason. Built in 1986, it celebrates the sun, light, and hope. Many tourists and locals alike think that this statue depicts a Viking ship, but the author himself stated that this is an unfortunate misunderstanding and that he sees it rather as a "dreamboat".

The statue is one of the most popular destinations for taking pictures of Mount Esja. It gets especially splendid and romantic during dusk and dawn. However, if it is the best photographs that you are after, you may want to wait and visit outside the height of the tourist season. During this time, you would find it difficult to get a clear shot, since it gets crowded and the tourists often choose to climb onto the boat.
