The Embarcadero

This lively waterfront area is lined with imposing historical piers, lively bars and cosy restaurants. If you plan to visit Alcatraz Island, the ferry there departs from Pier 33. There is also the famous Pier 39 in Fisherman's Wharf – a very popular spot among both the locals and tourists.

Among the most visited places located there are the Ferry Building Marketplace (a large shopping centre with nearly 50 shops), the Aquarium of the Bay or the Ghirardelli Square (another shopping centre). If you are in the mood for a bit of science, head to the Exploratorium (located at Pier 15) - an interactive science museum.

Even if you do not wish to visit any of the attractions or bars, the Embarcadero is a great place for a pleasant stroll. It is also a popular spot for walking, jogging, and inline skating.
