Yasaka Shrine

Local name八坂神社
LocationHigashiyama-ku, Kyoto, Japan

Yasaka Shrine is one of the Kanpei-taisha, which means that it is highly supported by the government. Its history dates back to 656.

The shrine organises the Gion Festival, which has been appeasing the god of Gion for the past 1100 years. During this month-long period, the Yasaka Shrine holds various religious events and services and it is a serene place, where you can almost feel the presence of the otherworldly existence.

It consists of numerous smaller shrines and the whole complex is open non-stop. When you come here after dark, all the buildings are beautifully lit up and you can adore the spectacular view of the area.

This place is perfect for relaxing after a long day, as it has a beautiful garden where you can sit and enjoy the peaceful ambience.

If you want to avoid big groups of people, you should not come here around the end of the year, and the first few weeks of a new one, as it usually gets a bit crowded.
