Founded in the 12th century as a wooden tower, this hillside fortress evolved into a stone keep and a fortified village known as a castrum. The site served a strategic role in protecting local trade routes and the nearby abbey. Human occupation of the steep rock dates back to the Neolithic period, with evidence of long-term settlement including troglodytic dwellings carved into the stone.
The architectural remains consist of six towers, residential buildings, stables, and workshops. A Romanesque chapel is a focal point of ongoing restoration efforts that have been active since the late 20th century. Below the medieval structures lies a prehistoric cave containing ancient engravings.
Guided tours, independent visits with audioguides, and various educational workshops are available. Special evening events take place periodically. The site documents a family history spanning from the 11th century through various periods of English and Catholic control during historical conflicts.
