The monument is a large obelisk built in the Egyptian Revival architectural style, primarily constructed from marble and granite. Designed by Robert Mills and completed under the supervision of Thomas Lincoln Casey, Sr. and the United States Army Corps of Engineers, its construction began in 1848 and concluded in 1884.
Standing approximately 169 meters tall, it serves as a prominent national memorial honoring George Washington, the first President of the United States. The structure functions as a significant historical landmark and viewpoint, offering expansive views of the surrounding city.
